My lawyer brain says the warranty starts the day of delivery. So rock on ...

The warranty starts on the date the car is delivered to the customer. Ford and most manufacturers work this way but I’m sure there are exceptions . You don’t loose 2 years of warranty coverage because the car has been parked on the lot for 2 years.

I test drove a brand new 2016 Miata late last year. Mazda was offering an extended warranty on it on top of the standard warranty which would start at on the day it was sold.

A friend picked up ( a much more common vehicle) , that was leftover from 20 17. there is a slight asterisk for situations such as this. I think it is often model year+ 12 months from when the new one comes out . So a 17 may be good till sept of 20 18 .
It is because manufacturers want to get the car off their books and add another notch for units moved and to motivate dealers to move product. It becmoes the d ealers responsibility and as far as the manufacturers concerned now their problem, so the warrenty starts. .

Markups + insurance rates. Focus ST falls under the Focus badge as a whole. Not one company batted an eye when I asked for quotes as a 27 year old buying a new Focus. Focus RS got its own category. Good luck, anyone with a ticket....

This same situation happens consistently every single time a low volume hot-ticket car like the RS gets made.
For every 1 dealer that happens to catch some dumbass with more money than sense who absolutely has to be the first with the new flashy toy, all the rest are left with their asinine, self-inflicted greed tax to bite them in the ass later.
With the odds completely stacked against them, why can’t these people learn not to behave like that?
The financial impact is there. The media impact is there. Those two ought to be enough to convince these businesses not to be so customer hostile.
Clearly that is not enough motivation. And obviously these establishments exists to benefit their customers in such an incredible way. Their “market adjustments” are there to protect buyers from making rash, emotional decisions.
I am forever grateful dealers save us from ourselves and prevent people from impulsively buying such rare and delicate vehicles.

All excellent points, but here’s my take - I have grown up and lived in decently-regulated states - DC, MD, NY. Each state is different, and those dealer practices may very well be overridden by state law that limits what a dealer can do when a car hasn’t been titled. Check your state, your mileage may vary ...

And that said, you can certainly negotiate with a dealer to honor the manufacturer’s warranty or provide a CPO warranty. This is America!

If no one brought it before, it’s new. If there is still one 2016 F ocus RS on the lot in 2065 that remains un brought , whoever buys it will be buying a new 2016 Focus RS.
‘Newness’ with cars is about how many people have owned it before (0), not how chronologically old it might be.

true.
my friend did get a super deal. As he’ll always hit the mile cutoff before age, he wasn’t too concerned loosing 6 months. H e was very happy due to the huge cut they took.
